A Note From Deanne
Last week I heard from Roger Dunnick, who used my Conquer Anxiety Success Program to conquer his social anxiety. In his email he shared a really helpful tip -- reading aloud for social anxiety -- a technique I have shared one-on-one with many of you through the years.
Reading aloud regularly can be a very helpful strategy for addressing social anxiety, especially when you feel like you get tongue-tied, have trouble with certain words, or feel like you are being judged while you're in speaking with others.
Enjoy Roger's tip in his own words. (Thanks for giving back to help others, Roger!) Dedicated to your success,
Anxiety Tip
Reading Aloud for Social Anxiety by Roger Dunnick
Something that has been particularly successful for me in conquering social anxiety is the daily reading out loud of excerpts from various magazines (e.g. Time, National Geographic) and books. When I started this routine, I made lists of words that I had trouble pronouncing; for me, the most troublesome words to pronounce were those ending with three consonants (e.g. rafts, lists, hosts, requests, tasks, texts, and so on).
Each day, I would start my routine by saying each of these words several times; I would also practice combining as many of these words as I could into sentences. I would then finish my routine by reading an article or two in a magazine or a short chapter in a book.
I quickly got to the point where I looked forward to my one hour of reading out loud each day. I typically perform this routine in the morning, before I go to work.
I make a game of it. I see how fast I can read something and still be articulate. After each session, I feel incredibly relaxed and excited, and am definitely in the right mindset to start my day!
This routine has given me confidence in my speaking ability, and has helped me maintain the same relaxed and excited feeling when speaking with others during my work day. I no longer experience "brain freeze" when speaking, for which I will be eternally grateful.
I wanted to share the "reading out loud" experience with you because it might be of help to others who are experiencing the debilitating cloak of social anxiety.
