Anxiety Tip

Soothing Work Fears

Most of us can relate to the work fear: "Everyone is going to find out that I'm not as talented or capable as they think I am and I'll get fired."

Here's why this anxious thought is false:
You are probably feeling anxious because you are expecting yourself to be the best person that's done this job ever, in any universe.

In other words, you're expecting more from yourself than your boss and coworkers are expecting. You have unrealistic self-expectations. Remember, you wouldn't have the job if you did not show some ability and talent to be successful at it.

Replace worry with fact with these positive turnaround statements. Remind yourself that:

"The fact that I don't know it ALL doesn't mean I'm untalented. I AM talented and competent."

"It's OK to ask if I have questions or need help."

"I am in the learning process of mastering this job. I am improving every day."

"People aren't fired for being imperfect. My coworkers and boss aren't perfect and they still have THEIR jobs. So why would my situation be any different? The company has a vested interest in helping me succeed."

Try using index cards to help you practice your positive self-talk. Write the anxious thought on the front of the card, and several turnaround statements on the back. Take the index cards with you in your purse or briefcase.  Whenever you start telling yourself anxious thoughts about work, you'll have the tools you need right in front of you.
